Appointments only, at 10 Victoria Terrace in Durham City: one client at a time, fully consultation-led, with K18 molecular repair included in every colour service.

The Studio
Hair for the People is a private colour studio. There is no salon floor, no walk-ins, no overlap between clients. Every appointment is one-to-one, in a space built entirely around the work.
Balayage, blonding, vivids, colour correction, extensions. Every chemical service includes K18 molecular repair as standard.

Salon price lists can be hard to find. Ours are published online and accessible to all — so you know exactly what your services will cost before you come in.

The studio now works exclusively with Davines — a family-founded colour and care system built in Parma, Italy, since 1983, developed alongside their own working botanical garden.
Davines has been a certified B Corporation since 2016, with a standing commitment to regenerative, sustainably-sourced ingredients.

The UK hair industry is almost entirely unregulated. No licensing, no governing body, no enforceable standards. Anyone can work on a client.

Colour Corrections
The most technically demanding service in the industry — and one we specialise in. Some corrections resolve in a single appointment; others need a staged plan across several sessions, always with gold-standard products and enough time to do it properly.

M. Lou Johnston
I trained at cosmetology school in West Palm Beach and earned my license in 2003, then spent two years in Boston completing a formal apprenticeship before moving to New York City, where I worked my way up the industry for the better part of twenty years. Coming to County Durham to build a private colour studio was a deliberate step away from that pace — a space built around colour work alone, with the time and room to do each service properly.
Davines felt like a natural fit for the same reason: a smaller, family-run company with the right ethics and a genuine focus on sustainability and environmentalism, rather than scale for its own sake. I'm proud to be the first salon in Durham to offer their full range of products, treatments, and colour.
Every appointment starts as a conversation, not a checklist. Your hair history, what's worked, what hasn't, what you actually want day-to-day — that's the plan before any colour gets mixed. No two heads get the same formula, and nothing happens on the clock.
