Permanent Colour vs Demi-Permanent Colour
Understanding the difference between permanent and demi-permanent colour is essential to protecting the long-term integrity of the hair. Permanent colour is not “more permanent” in terms of longevity. Both permanent and demi-permanent pigments fade. The difference is whether the natural colour has been altered in the process.
At HAIR FOR THE PEOPLE, colour services are chosen based on necessity, not habit. Lift is used only when it serves a clear purpose—protecting the hair’s condition while achieving the most natural, stable result over time.
Permanent Colour
Permanent colour is classed as permanent because it lifts the natural hair colour before depositing the chosen pigment. This process permanently alters the hair’s natural melanin.
Permanent colour is used when:
Grey coverage is required
Natural hair needs to be taken lighter
A structural change to the base colour is necessary
Lifting the natural colour is what places the most stress on the hair. Over time, repeated use of permanent colour—especially when lift isn’t required—can compromise condition.
It’s important to understand that the pigments in permanent colour do not last longer than those in demi-permanent colour. Both fade in the same way over time. What makes permanent colour “permanent” is not the pigment, but the fact that the hair’s natural colour has been lightened and permanently changed.
Repeated lifting also explains why hair that has been coloured over and over with permanent colour often pulls warm or red over time. Natural hair lifts through underlying red and orange stages, and once that warmth has been exposed, darker colours layered on top will continue to reveal it as they fade.
Demi-Permanent Colour
Demi-permanent colour does not lift the natural hair colour. It deposits pigment only, working tone-on-tone with what’s already there.
Demi-permanent colour is ideal for:
Darkening the hair
Refining or correcting tone
Adding depth, richness, and shine
Maintaining colour while preserving hair integrity
Because there is no lift involved, demi-permanent colour is significantly gentler on the hair. When lightening isn’t required, this is often the most responsible and sustainable option.
