A One-to-One Hair Studio in Durham

HAIR FOR THE PEOPLE is built around focused, individual appointments, prioritising care, communication, and long-term results

We work slowly, deliberately, and with intention. Every service is designed to protect the integrity of the hair first. Nothing here is rushed. Nothing is added on at the chair.

THE STUDIO

Hair for the People operates as a full salon. The studio is designed for focused, one-to-one work, with appointments structured to allow proper consultation, considered execution, and a finished result.

Hair for the People is a L’Oréal Professionnel salon. Our colour, care, and treatment systems are built around professional L’Oréal formulations chosen for performance, consistency, and hair integrity over time. Product selection here is not trend-driven. Everything used in the studio supports repair, predictability, and long-term maintenance.

The environment is intentionally calm and controlled. Appointments are time-held, services are not rushed, and nothing is added on at the chair. Every client leaves with dry, finished hair, and a clear plan for maintenance moving forward.

Hair for the People is built for people who value consistency, care, and outcomes that hold up beyond the appointment itself.

THE WORK

Our approach is health-first and maintenance-driven. Colour services are planned with longevity in mind, not short-term impact. Repair, toning, and finishing are built into the service — not offered as upgrades.

Rituals and memberships exist to support consistency rather than transformation. They are designed for clients who want their hair managed well over time.

THE FOUNDER

HAIR FOR THE PEOPLE was founded and is led by Lou Johnston — a colour specialist whose career began in the United States and whose standards have never changed regardless of the postcode.

Lou earned her cosmetology licence in West Palm Beach, Florida, before completing a formal apprenticeship outside of Boston. She then spent much of her professional career working in independent and high-end salon environments in New York City — an experience that shaped a working style built entirely around consultation, precision, and long-term hair health.

After relocating to the North East of England, she recognised a gap between the quality of service she was trained in and what was commonly available locally — particularly around colour, maintenance, repair, and transparency in pricing. HAIR FOR THE PEOPLE was built to close that gap.

The Durham studio brings a considered, Manhattan-informed approach to colour and care into a Durham context — without the noise, the speed, or the hierarchy that often comes with it. Every appointment is one-to-one, every result is planned with longevity in mind, and every client leaves with dry, finished hair and a clear plan for what comes next.

Twenty years in. The same standard. No pretension.

ACCESS

Hair for the People is intentionally small. Appointments are limited, and some services are offered by consultation only.

Student access is structured rather than informal, with defined pricing and specific availability.

WHAT WE DON’T DO

We don’t rush appointments.
We don’t upsell at the chair.
We don’t negotiate prices.
We don’t offer services that compromise health or safety.
